Unlocking Business Value with FinOps
A humorous, real-world take on implementing FinOps

Just finished setting up resource tagging automation and stumbled upon this gem
So there I was, at 3 AM, trying to figure out why our kubernetes costs went through the roof, when I realized: we need to seriously talk about FinOps. You know, that bridge between finance folks who always ask "why are we spending so much?" and us saying "because the cloud doesn't run on air!"
What FinOps Really Means for Us
1. Governance: Or as I call it, "finally knowing where the money goes"
I implemented a Grafana dashboard that pings when something exceeds the budget. Literally, the CFO now texts me at 2 AM: "Why is that cluster costing us a kidney?"
We formed a "FinOps team" which is basically me and the finance guy who finally learned what an instance is.
2. Cost Optimization: Or "how to stop bleeding money"
After the CEO nearly had a heart attack seeing the bill, we got serious about reserved instances.
I discovered we had servers running at full capacity... to host a status page nobody visits. Typical. Resized them and voilà! - 30% instant savings.
3. Strategic Alignment: Or "convincing the bosses that not everything is expensive just because"
Now every time someone says "let's put it in the cloud," I ask them: "and exactly how is this going to generate money?"
Finally got product, finance, and us speaking the same language. Well, almost... I still have to explain what Kubernetes is every two weeks.
Why This Matters (and why it keeps me up at night)
No joke: last month I found a test cluster nobody shut down since 2022. It was costing more than my mortgage.
Let's be real: if we don't control these costs, we'll end up like that meme of the dog sitting in a burning house saying "This is fine."
I've set up automatic alerts, cleanup scripts, and even a Slack bot that publicly shames teams that leave resources unused. Works like a charm!
